Summary



Galactocele's are a localised accumulation of milk in an obstructed lactiferous duct


Ultrasound Features



Well defined mass with smooth margins that will contain low level echoes.


Differential Diagnoses



Breast cyst with internal echoes.


Pathology



Blocked lactiferous milk duct causing a localised acumulation of milk in the lactating breast.


Protocol



Scanning of the entire breast with particular interest to the site of tenderness or 'hard lump' located in the breast. There should be measurements taken of the mass, it's location within the breast as well as distance from the nipple and depth from the skin.


Diagnostic Criteria



Pain, enlarged, hard breast. Lactating patient.Well defined mass with smooth margins that will contain low level echoes.
