Breast Abscess

Summary



Breast abscesses are an inflammaory process of the breast tissue which can vary in appearance depending upon the stage of inflammation.


Ultrasound Features



Appearances vay depending upon the stage of inflmmation.
May be an ill-defined solid mass with irregular margins.
Can have well defined, circumscribed margns with throug transmission.


Pathology



Inflammation of the breast tissue, often seen in breast feeding women due to blocked ducts (mastitis.
Pain, swelling, redness at skin site at region of abcess, fever.


Protocol



Scan throughout breat, with standard breaat imaging protocol. Locate area of interest - image and demonstrate distance from nipple, location in breast, dimension of the abcess and the depth of the abcess in case drainage is required.


Differential Diagnoses



breast carcinoma (diagnosis based on clinical findings)


Diagnostic Criteria

Scanning Tips



often a layer of gel or a stand-off scanning pad can be useful due to the significant tenderness / patient discomfort the patient experiences with breast abcesses.
