Congenital eventration of the diaphragm may be partial or complete and is due to aplasia of a portion of the muscle of the diaphragm. This gives rise to an abnormal elevation of all or part of its structure. As a result intra-abdominal contents are displaced into the chest and may provide varying degrees of respiratory compromise after birth. The presence of intra-abdominal contents in the fetal chest with subsequent identification of these contents below the leaf of the hemidiaphragm.
Associated findings may include skeletal, cardiac, renal and facial malformations. Trisomy 13,15 and 18 have also been seen in association with eventration.
